Biography

Born in Monfalcone, is regarded as one of the most distingushed italian bass-baritones of his generation and one of the most prominent belcanto singers today. 

He made his debut as Belcore in L’elisir d’amore at the Rome Opera and he then sang the role at San Francisco Opera, at Teatro alla Scala, at Staatsoper unter den Linden, at Teatro Regio in Turin, at Opéra de Lausanne, at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova.

Among the other Donizetti roles in his repertoire we acknowledge: Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor (Sydney, Melbourne, Barcelona and Bologna); Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore (Bordeaux, Stuttgart and, conducted by M° James Conlon, at the Los Angeles Opera); Lo Czar in Il borgomastro di Sardaam (Donizetti Opera Festival).

During the last seasons he established himself with great praise from both the critics and the audience as one of the most authoritative Rossini singers with roles such as: Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia (Teatro alla Scala, La Fenice in Venice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Opéra National de Paris, Opéra de Lausanne, Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, Sydney Opera House, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Budapest Summer Festival, LAC Lugano); Dandini in La cenerentola (Paris, Nice, Lausanne, Rome, Florence, Bologna, Frankfurt, Glyndebourne, Cardiff); Taddeo in L’italiana in Algeri (Barcelona, Berlin, Rome, Aix-en-Provence); Don Profondo in Il viaggio a Reims (Melbourne Arts Centre and Sydney Opera House directed by Damiano Michieletto); Gaudenzio in Il Signor Bruschino (Rossini Opera Festival and Teatro Comunale in Bologna); Filippo in La Gazzetta (Rossini Opera Festival conducted by M° Carlo Rizzi).

His Mozart roles include: Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro (Staatsoper and Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Aix-en-Provence), the title role in Don Giovanni (Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari) and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte (Sanxay Festival).

His wide repertoire also includes: Lescaut in Manon Lescaut (Washington National Opera), Ping in Turandot (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden), Marcello in La bohème (Los Angeles Opera, Staatsoper Berlin, Sydney Opera House); Germont in La Traviata (Florida Grand Opera), Ford in Falstaff (Verdi Festival in Parma), the title role in Rigoletto(Sydney Opera House), Guy de Montfort in Les vêpres siciliennes (conducted by M° Daniele Gatti at the Rome Opera and at the Welsh National Opera); Escamillo in Carmen (Welsh National Opera).

He has worked with such distinguished conductors as: Bruno Bartoletti, Enrico Calesso, Bruno Campanella, James Conlon, Riccardo Frizza, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Harding, Jesús López-Cobos, Nicola Luisotti, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, Michel Plasson, Carlo Rizzi, Leonardo Sini, Michele Spotti, etc… and directors such as: Marco Bellocchio, Irina Brook, Sir Peter Hall, Denis Krief, Damiano Michieletto, Franciso Negrin, Laurent Pelly, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Massimo Ranieri, Luca Ronconi, Jérôme Savary, Andrei ?erban, Toni Servillo, Jacopo Spirei, Stefano Vizioli, etc…

In 2012 he received the Australian Green Room Award as best singer of the year.

In 2021 he released his solo Rossini recital The Art of Virtuoso Baritone published by Glossa with unanimous approval from the international press.

Among his recent and future engagements: Bozzone in Salieri’s Cublai Kahn conducted by Christophe Rousset at Theater an der Wien (recorded by Harmonia Mundi); Dandini in La cenerentola directed by Gavazzeni and Maranghi at Teatro Verdi in Trieste; Arno von Stahl in the Italian premiere of Tutino’s Falso tradimento inSassari; a solo Recital with orchestra at Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro; Tartaglia in Mascagni’s Le maschere for his debut at the Wexford Festival; Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro for the opening of the season atTeatro Regio in Turin and at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova as well as, in the role of Count Almaviva, at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff and in Trieste; two editions of Concerto di fine anno at Teatro Verdi in Trieste; Lucifero in Händel’s Resurrezione at the Basilica di Massenzio for the summer season of Teatro dell’Opera in Rome; his debut as Mustafà in L’italiana in Algeri in Reggio Emilia, Modena, Piacenza, Ravenna, Trento and Novara; his debut as Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Teatro del Maggio in Florence.
